Research Topic: Encyclopedia of Algerian Rulers During the Ottoman Period
Team Leader's Name: Yemna Behiri
General Objectives
The team is dedicated to studying the political and administrative landscape of Ottoman Algeria, focusing on the nature of Ottoman rule from 1516 to 1830. It seeks to understand the political systems that shaped the country during this period and their impacts. The research explores the structure of the administration, including the key institutions, protocols, and processes of appointments and dismissals. It also looks into the relationship between the Ottoman rulers and local powers, such as the beyliks, villages, and tribes, examining local alliances, conflicts, and how the administration dealt with these issues.
Another important area of study is the exploration of the Ottoman rulers of Algeria, their origins, backgrounds, and ties to the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia. The team is also interested in the legacy of the Ottoman administrators, especially their wealth and inheritance, to better understand how this political class was integrated into the social fabric of the eyalet. In addition, the research investigates the reasons behind the exclusion of the local elite from high-ranking state positions and their reactions to this exclusion. The team also studies how Algerian rulers approached local administrative appointments in both urban and rural areas. Lastly, the team aims to analyze the overall philosophy behind Ottoman rule in Algeria, compare it with other regions of the Maghreb, and conduct a comprehensive survey of the Ottoman archives in Algeria, producing historical works on the governance and rulers of the period.
